February 2024 Edition of the Risk Reduction Review

The February 2024 Edition of the Risk Reduction Review is now available. I have included the link to the newsletter below along with a message describing what is included in this edition.

In the newsletter there is a link to the ICC Region I Radio Podcast. In this episode I sat down with FDNY Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, diving deep into the critical issues surrounding fire safety, lithium-ion battery technology, and the rise of micromobility devices like e-bikes and e-scooters. In this discussion, Commissioner Kavanagh shares her journey to leading the nation's largest fire department, revealing a commitment to public service and safety.

This episode sheds light on the unique challenges and strategies the FDNY employs to combat the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, especially in the context of New York City's bustling urban environment. Learn about the regulatory measures in place, including the ban on non-UL certified devices and the push for new licensing to ensure the safe use of last-mile delivery devices in the episode.

I have also started a new website dedicated to community risk reduction and fire prevention. The site is www.riskreductionreview.com. This includes stories from the newsletter along with exclusive content relating to community risk reduction and fire prevention.

I look forward to sharing more in the future.

Imagine a world where fire safety evolves with every technological advancement, while finding ways to reduce risks and enhancing our ability to protect our communities. This is not just a vision; it's the reality we're delving into in this February edition of the Risk Reduction Review Newsletter.

Our focus this month centers on the critical and ever-relevant topic of lithium-ion batteries—powering our devices but also presenting new challenges in fire safety. From the insights of Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh of the FDNY, we explore strategies and solutions to mitigate these risks, emphasizing the importance of public education, regulatory measures, and collaboration.

This edition doesn't stop there; we highlight innovative approaches, such as the use of fire blankets in electric vehicle fire emergencies, the efficacy of fire sprinkler systems against lithium-ion battery blazes, and the pioneering research at Clemson University towards self-extinguishing batteries. Each article is chosen to inform, inspire, and ignite a dialogue on improving safety standards and practices within our industry.

Our goal is to equip you, the dedicated professionals at the forefront of building and fire safety, with knowledge and insights that empower you to make a difference.
