Arizona Fire School resumes hands-on training

Arizona Fire School will return in regular format this September.

After being transitioned to online classes during the pandemic, in-person training is being brought back Sept. 9-12, 2021, for the benefit of firefighters from across Arizona.

Basic firefighter skills, live fire training, vehicle stabilization, patient extrication, driving and many other skills required in a firefighter’s line of duty can only be mastered in a hands-on environment. For that reason, all the traditional course offerings are being planned during the 48th annual Arizona Fire School in Mesa.

Opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Mesa Convention Center. More than 32 courses are offered along with a platform for a “New Chiefs Seminar.” While the bulk of the classroom courses utilize Mesa Convention Center, fire chiefs from Chandler, Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix allow the use of their training facilities as well.

State Fire School is run by a volunteer committee of chiefs and fire service employees from around Arizona. Close to 800 firefighters at all levels of service, from all sizes of department, gain invaluable training and continued education during the four to five days of classes.

State Fire School Committee Chairman Ed Temerowski (Wickenburg Fire Chief) said plans are already rolling for this year’s training.

“We look forward to bringing this unique training experience to all Arizona fire service employees and build the relationships and continue education for our attendees,” Temerowski said.

In addition to all the educational opportunities, the committee host several events for the students to attend.

· Thursday night will be a special invitation to visit the Hall of Flame Firefighting Museum, special rates will be offered to the students and their families.

· The Friday Night Expo is held outside the Convention Center. Vendors display firefighting gear, special equipment and fire ground tactical equipment, along with safety demonstrations and a variety of food trucks. The evening includes family activities with an area for children to pet the critters from the Phoenix Herpetological Society, get a custom balloon, learn home and fire safety, and take a photo with Smokey Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog. Music entertainment are provided by fellow-firefighter from Pine-Strawberry Kevin Figueroa and his son Doyle.

· Saturday Night is a raffle in an adult fun atmosphere with thousands of dollars of merchandise raffled and auctioned off to benefit fire school attendees.
