VBFD's Safety Squad Elementary School Program

“Safety Squad” is a new program, designed by Virginia Beach Fire Department’s Life Safety Education Team.  We have just completed our 1st semester back in schools, and we are so excited to share these resources with everyone! Here’s one more FREE curriculum for your toolbox!

VBFD’s Safety Squad pairs digitally engaging lessons (delivered by PE staff) along with interactive learning stations (facilitated by Life Safety Educators and Firefighters) to teach students in grades K-5th about fire safety and injury prevention.  Each year, 30,000 students across 56 VB elementary schools will participate in action-based learning stations that align with Virginia’s State Learning Objectives in Health and PE and NFPA’s Desk Reference in Educational Messaging.

We certainly aren’t the 1st department to utilize portable door & window props to facilitate basic fire safety concepts in a gym class setting.  Covid gave us the downtime to break away from the traditional classroom lecture format, re-evaluate, and plan for approach that reaches today’s learners through movement and engaging activities. No worksheets!

Check out our Video Intro and Lesson Plans.

Join us on FB! Collaborate with VBFD's Safety Squad and other fire and life safety education professionals using interactive station-based instruction to deliver fire safety and injury prevention lessons to school groups. Join us to get the FREE content and downloads, or stay a while and let’s share ideas and best practices!  We will be uploading all digital content (including editable canva/google slide templates) for you to make your own Safety Squad program!

Pre-lesson videos are sent in advance to classroom and/or gym teachers. The purpose is to preface the Safety Squad station instruction, giving students consistent and digitally engaging introductory content. Safety Squad’s learning stations serve as reinforcement, practice, and review. The google slides are posted on our website at www.vbfdlifesafety.com/elementary

Each set of slides might take 15-30 minutes for a teacher to show a class, or can even be assigned through the student's learning platform. The pre-lessons save us time and make our job easier!

Age-appropriate video content was gathered from a variety of resources for the pre-lessons: NFPA kids/sparky.org, Sound Off with the Home Fire Safety Patrol, USFA, and Vision 2020. We even created a few of our own videos/resources in areas where videos are outdated or lacking (fire misuse, turnout gear demo, station tour)

Feel free to reach out with any questions!
