ABA Position Statement on Home Oxygen Burn Prevention

 Hello CRR Friends and Colleagues,

 

We’re excited to share the announcement of the newly released American Burn Association (ABA) position statement on home medical oxygen related burn injury/fire prevention!  This is a first step in several national strategic initiatives targeting this high-risk safety issue.  We’ve seen this injury etiology repeatedly in our hospital inpatient/outpatient/Emergency Department and community populations.

 

Please take a few minutes to read the statement posted on the ABA website (also attached as a .pdf).  The position statement was written by a national task force of multidisciplinary professionals, that I had the pleasure of co-leading with Dr. Rebecca Coffey (Parkland Health) and Dr. Amalia Cochran (University of Florida Health).  If any of you or your colleagues registered for the 2022 American Burn Association Annual Meeting, you can virtually view the workshop that we held discussing a burn case resulting from home medical oxygen and smoking in “Ethics Workshop:  Ethical Dilemmas in Complicated Cases” session “Smoking on Home O2:  Response and Strategies for Prevention.”  I’d also like to do a huge “shout out” to our CRR colleague Mark Norford in WY who has been an integral member of the task force and part of this tireless work!  Learn more about Wyoming’s 307CCR initiative by clicking here.

 

To increase awareness, please share the new position statement widely with your colleagues and professional networks!  The next steps of the national task force are looking at federal legislative advocacy efforts possibly including a mandate on bidirectional thermal fuses in oxygen tubing.  As this continues to evolve, we’ll share any action items that you can help support.

NFPA Updates   NFPA has a new director for our Public Education Division, Kelly Ransdell! Kelly has been with NFPA for several years, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position.
