GIVING CPR TO A PREGNANT PERSON: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Posted August 23, 2022 to the ASHI and MEDIC First Aid Blog GIVING CPR TO A PREGNANT PERSON: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW What do I do if the victim is pregnant in the event of cardiac arrest? This is a common question that Emergency Care Instructors hear when covering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) topics. Some bystanders might feel hesitant to intervene out of fear of harming the baby or mother. This topic is important to discuss to help reduce barriers to bystander CPR and AED use. Just like with other cardiac arrest victims, it’s better to provide care than to do nothing at all. CPR and defibrillation steps are the same —you'll perform CPR and use an AED as you would with non-pregnant adults.  Here’s some information to better understand how a woman’s body adapts during pregnancy and special considerations to take when providing emergency care.  HEART HEALTH DURING PREGNANCY Pregnancy causes many anatomical and physiological changes tha

CRR Week

Image
CRR Week is a grass-roots effort by an informal group of fire safety professionals from across the nation. The idea is to help promote the awareness of Community Risk Reduction within the fire service by having a week where everyone can do CRR programs and demonstrate its importance to the fire service.  Part of a National Strategy… In 2008, Vision 20/20 held its first meeting, bringing together hundreds experts from across the nation to discuss the gaps in fire prevention. This landmark meeting resulted in identifying five specific strategies that needed to be addressed to help fill the gaps in fire prevention. CRR Week is focused on addressing strategy one, advocacy. Advocating for fire prevention is difficult when fire chiefs have to deal with competing priorities, both within a fire department and within their municipality. This strategy focuses on helping to develop tools and information that can be used when advocating for more resources to devote to fire prevention. More informa

Legislation and an Increase in Fireworks Injuries

Image
ED visits at two level 1 trauma centers were reviewed to compare pre-legislation and post-legislation firework related injuries. Ed visits and pediatric admissions increased after allowing fireworks. The injury sites were similar pre- and post-legislation; almost half to hands followed by eyes and face). Amputations went from 0 to 16.2%! In 2017 Iowa ended a statewide ban on retail fireworks sales, though local governments could have their own rules. The state allows the sale and use of fireworks from June 1 – July 8 and December 10 – January 3. If I read the law correctly, novelty fireworks are always allowed. Firework use is limited to certain hours of the day, and the only age limitation I found was that you must be 18 to purchase. In 2022 the locals were no longer allowed to ban the sale of fireworks in commercial or industrial zones. Read the full study

What You Need to Know About Splash Pad Safety

Image
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SPLASH PAD SAFETY Splash pads are popular attractions for families looking for an easy alternative to public pools and water parks. These little spray parks come with a variety of water features and interactive fountains that don’t allow standing water to collect. Therefore, there’s a reduced risk of drowning for young children. But a splash park still has the potential for illness and water-related injuries. Here's what you need to know about splash pad safety. BEST PRACTICES FOR SPLASH PAD SAFETY Due to their design, spray pads aren’t always regulated as an “aquatic venue.” They also aren’t always required to disinfect the splash pad water with germ-killing chemicals. Therefore, germs can spread and make users sick. The  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC) lays out some splash pad safety tips to help families stop the spread of germs in these water play areas, including: Have children shower before getting in the water. Stay out of the
