We might try to stop it, but pop culture always finds a way into kids' lives. And pop culture today is social media—mainly TikTok. Here's a true story: The other day, driving my third grader home from school, I was surprised to overhear him humming a song from a popular TikTok video I'd seen. It was a specific song with a very specific four-letter word in it. To be clear, my son does not have a TikTok account. Did he overhear it somewhere? Or maybe a friend's older sibling showed it to him. Did he somehow see it cross-posted on YouTube? I asked him, of course, but you know how that goes.  I get it, that's just how these things work. But it was a tragedy years in the making. It began before the fire started one floor below, in an apartment without working smoke detectors. It was already in motion before the flames spread through a broken door and up the stairs through darkened hallways. In fact, the tragedy began long before the single mother moved her family into the modest one-bedroom home. They were, like so many families, hoping for better days. They were also completely unaware the city had known for years the building was a firetrap. Shamaya Coleman inside her home in Chicago’s East Chatham neighborhood in August.   Burn Prevention Framework Released   CHICAGO, IL  – The American Burn Association (ABA) released the Burn Prevention Framework via publication in the Journal of Burn Care and Research (JBCR). This resource sets a standard for burn prevention programming to make quality programming design and education more accessible to all. In February 2020, burn prevention experts from a variety of professional backgrounds gathered for a national Burn Prevention Summit. The resulting framework for burn prevention program planning includes components of a successful program, a five-step process for program planning, best practices in messaging, and general advice from the summit attendees.
